How can you determine and what determines the gender of a marijuana plant?

i've heard many different things that aterations to the the light cycle can change the gender of a plant also pollination ( which makes more sense)..... I assumed that the genetic make up ( gender) was predetermined and the only factor is whether the female gets pollinated or not? hm.....How can you determine and what determines the gender of a marijuana plant?
Very simply,

Males have seed pods that literally look like plant-testicles, dangling from the stems. These open up and make different colored flowers when mature.

Females have white hairs emerging from raindrop-shaped buds ONTOP of the stem, or going up the stem. These make those tasty buds and all the colorful calyxes when budding starts and they mature.

Cannabis' gender is naturally determined at ';puberty';, right before the vegetative state (which is like the ';teen'; phase), after germination (birth), and the 2- 6 weeks pre-veg. (toddler stage)

Stress, such as changing the light cycle constantly, adding cold water, changing the temperature, changing the ferts, changing the soil, ect - these *can* all cause shock and produce predominantly male plants.

Marijuana is pretty awesome in the fact that it is one of the only plants we know of that has physically different looking males vs females, this just makes it easier to find the ladies. How can you determine and what determines the gender of a marijuana plant?
Shocking a plant can make it go hermaphrodite.....Female with seeds. Pollination will also produce seeds (fertile)

Males are long and slender which produce seed pods.
Male flowers will have stamens, female flowers will have pistils.
