How men can be engaged to promote positive change in gender relations?

Its a tough question, because there isn't really a whole lot in it for men. The patriarchic view in this country seems to cross all ethnic lines and span all generations. I would guess that women would have to come together in large numbers and get the men in their own lives to support such positive change. I think it would have to be our own mothers and wives and sisters pushing us for this before men started really being interested in such changes. How men can be engaged to promote positive change in gender relations?

2) Drag sandwich down hallway into Gender Studies classroom

3) Lock door
Oh, God, TARO, you win!!
I think there needs to be a change in the image/stereotypes of the people who want changes in gender relations. even on this site i see so much prejudice and stereotypes against feminists as 'whingeing/whining' etc. I think it needs to be realised that it is a universal issue, not just for a certain few people, and men need to think of it as a positive step - it will benefit men and women, not just women. People need to realise that these issues relate and apply directly to them and their lives. I also think if men realised that women don't WANT to think badly of them, but do because of past experience (I do anyway...), they might be more ready to be involved in change for the better, and promoting more equal relations. I also think the banning of the media (which is mostly incredibly offensive to women) and so called 'lads mags' would help to reduce a certain view of women which allows inequality to persist.
i am not sure
Allow men to participate in positive changes. Allow men to be men and women to be women. If we all started being ourselves and cared more about being loving people, we wouldn't have to worry about gender equality.

Stop treating men as if they are supposed to be women. Stop supressing men by blabbing about women being better than men. Noone really needs to hear that stuff anymore. Female supremacy is starting to show the negative effects of the movement. Christina Hoff Sommers wrote a very good book about this titles The War Against Boys.
women are most satisfied when the yare collared and at a man's feet
It seems to me like women are the ones with the problem. There are some feminists that believe in the complete segregation of the sexes, that all things masculine are evil, and have many other radical ideas, which is not a positive change in gender relations in my opinion. They are hurting the men in our society but also the women with this reverse sexism. There are many men now starting to feel resentment towards women. They don't just want to advance the female cause, they wan't denigrate men by doing it, instead of going foward together. It seems like many women today have this hatred and resentment towards men, and I don't know where it comes from. Maybe from the radical feminists preaching of injustices from a hundred years past, because women today have just as many rights as men, and in some cases even more. There are double standard for both sexes. Divorce is just one example, relaxed requirements to do jobs in the military and fire fighting, women have seemingly more opportunities and help getting into college (I've read there are now over 2 million more women enrolled in colleges in the U.S. than men) etc. A lot of the ';facts'; feminists report about women's salaries as opposed to men's are skewed as well. You can't just believe all of the rhetoric you hear from them, just as with any radical group. As far as women being objectified, which has been a big gripe by feminists for a long time, you can't blame men, it's biology. Especially since women put forth so much effort, time, and money trying to get male attention. They want us to look but they get upset when we do. What men think of as beauty is really just instinct telling us that a women is young and healthy enough to give us healthy offspring and ensure the survival of our genes. Men have more opportunities to reproduce so they are constantly looking at every woman they see. Women do the same thing when they judge men based on what they can provide. Bottom line women need men and men need women, not only to reproduce but also to be complete. We just need to forget all of the nonsense coming from the radical feminists that says all men are evil, and forget all of the nonsense coming from the ';old boys club'; that says women are basically the property of a man and should never leave the house. I believe ( or at least hope) these groups are the minority. The majority of feminists, I believe, want there to be harmony between the sexes and so do the majority of men. There are many feminists out there, including Sommers mentioned above, who have written books about how misguided feminism has become, I suggest you check out some of her work. Here is a review of one of her books, http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.ht
These gender questions are getting old.....I like men just the way they are....if I do not like them, I do not associate with them........I feel the same way about women, blacks, Asians, Muslims, Canadians and Mexicans....did I leave anyone out?
I dont think we can untill there is a general understanding that we are all human and equal no matter what our sex, race ,religous backgrounds.. ect.

Although I don't praise those who change their gender, I just respect their decision. Anyway its their lives and whatever they did to their selves, they are accountable to it.

It was my gynecologist. He was the best ';male'; doctor I ever met.

I wouldn't treat them any differently. Obvi...I wouldn't be able to, they're my boss so either way, if I did object, I might be the one getting fired. That's their business anyway and it wouldn't keep them from being my boss, sadly.
Would not matter, just the reference will change!

  • Some kinds of fish can change their gender from male to female. How does this ability aid the fish?

Since one male can mate with several females it helps the fish by having a higher percentage of females to continually produce young. The male can keep mating until he dies then one female comes out of production and becomes the next male. Some kinds of fish can change their gender from male to female. How does this ability aid the fish?
well to start, this was also MY d. science question...........and it said that its because of the reproduction and that certain fish change male to female but one type of specie cannot go back to its original gender............but yea. hope that helps....a lil'

How old do you have to be to decide to change your gender (from female to male)? and some other questions?

aren't there steps to it? like, changing the hormones?

can you do all that without actually having a surgery?

what about the legal stuff? are you officially a male or female? what would it say on your passport or drivers license? M or F?How old do you have to be to decide to change your gender (from female to male)? and some other questions?
I agree with LeahHow old do you have to be to decide to change your gender (from female to male)? and some other questions?
start slowly with the hormones then get the surgery
Without parental consent, I think it is 21, or get emancipated.
i would prob say about 18. you do have to take hormones. to become a woman legally you need to take the hormones and have a sex change. about the legal stuff you have to show that you have went through all the steps to become a woman. once youve done all that the state will legally consider you a woman. on your drivers license it would say female
Without parental consent/support you need to be 18 (in the USA).

The steps vary depending on what you need or want done. The first step though is seeing a gender therapist:

    http://www.DrBecky.com/therapists.html

Transition is a long, expensive process. For example my transition took 4.5 years and about $80,000. I didn't change my gender, I changed my body to match my gender.

I highly suggest you join an online support forum so you can talk to other trans guys and learn more. A couple that have good active sections for trans men are:

    Good Luck!

    .
There isn't really a definite age you choose that. You don't even really choose it. You just sort of know. But you don't normally begin gender reassignment surgery until you're 18, and even then you have to do at least one year of counseling, not to change your mind, but make sure it's what you really want. And you also have to live your life for an entire year as the opposite gender to be absolutely positive it's what you want. Otherwise the vast majority of certified surgeons will not perform the surgery.
Nobody decides to change their gender. Gender is fixed. You mean medical transitioning.

The ages vary based on where you live, in a lot of forward thinking regions you can gain access to puberty stalling hormones at a young age to ensure a time delay to discuss all the pros and cons of using hormone replacement therapy.

The first step is finding a doctor who will refer you to specialists. They then determine you are trans and will send you along to an endocrinologist who will start testosterone therapy. About a year into that you can begin looking into surgeries.

There is no ';one way'; to transition. There are guidelines sure, but nothing is mandatory except for keeping yourself safe and ensuring you are happy with the results. Anyone who says otherwise does not have your best interests at heart.

Legal stuff varies from region to region again. I live in Ontario, my driver's license reads correct (male) whereas my birth certificate (and all documentation that relies on it) has yet to be amended. I'll have that fixed in mere months though. All I needed to get my license corrected was a letter from my doctor stating I am male, and that my license should read as such (I got the letter written the same time my legal name change came in).

Am I officially a male or a female? That depends on which level of government or what organization you are speaking about. That's how arbitrary the two option system is. I am still the same person, yet I am technically no longer a person? It's all bull. I am a man, I always have been.
The youngest total, complete trans in the world was a male to female in Germany. she was 16.

i think you must have surgery, and you would be, at the end male and that's what all your documents would say.

How do you change the gender of your avatar from female to male?

On yahoo avatars, I want to make over a male avatar instead. How do you do that? How do you change the gender of your avatar from female to male?
I just tried this, because I did not know the answer either. This is what I found. In going to the site http://avatars.yahoo.com when you are in the Avatar site, you will see on the right hand side ';How To Use Avatars';, and next to that is ';Preferences';. This is above the little boxes that you usually choose for clothing, appearance, etc. You click on Preferences and it will give you the option to ';Change My Avatar's Gender';. There is a note that says you will lose most customizations and certain items may not be available for use on your new Avatar. Hope this helps. How do you change the gender of your avatar from female to male?
You can either do that or you can grow a mustache.
