Gwennie is the closest. The problem is most people think TRANSITION consists of only ';the operation';. Ummm NO. There are a million and one details that need to be taken care of during transition and almost all of them cost money. Just some of the costs:



Therapy. Sessions run $100-150/hr. Count on at least a couple dozen sessions.



Facial hair removal. Done with electrolysis, laser or a combination of both. Electrolysis can cost $50-80/hr and you would have to do somewhere between 150-300 hours worth to be hair free.



Body hair emoval. Many people need laser treatment to help reduce excess body hair still left after starting hormones.



Endocrinologist. This doctor evaluates your health, prescribes hormones, monitors your progress and orders labwork to check your hormone levels and liver function. Average cost per visit (with labwork): $500.



New Clothes: Cost highly variable. If you're lucky you're a plain Jane like me. :)



Legal fees. You have a legal name change and all that entails. New Birth certificate. New passport. Costs vary widely.



Facial surgery. Facial Feminization Surgery, if you get it, is THE most expensive part of transition. Usually $20-45,000.



Breast augmentation. Most women who transition past the age of about 21 need a breast augmentation to bring them up to normal size. Expect to pay about $6-8,000.



Sex reassignment surgery. Costs vary a lot depending if you have it in North America ($18-20,000) or overseas ($8-15,000).





My transition took 4.5 years and about $80,000.
